When Genentech began designing a new building on its campus, the team envisioned a lobby video wall that would reflect the company’s scientific roots in both a literal and poetic way. Instead of traditional LCD panels, each “pixel” of the installation was constructed from a backlit microscope slide, transforming the display into a luminous mosaic of light, color, and cellular texture. Genentech partnered with Swordfish to create custom content built specifically for this unconventional medium. The company provided clinical trial data sets, which we parsed directly into our 3D rendering pipeline, translating complex information into motion designed to play seamlessly across the slide-based installation. An adjacent LCD panel displayed the high-resolution animation alongside contextual explanations of the data visualization, allowing visitors to experience the artwork at architectural scale while also understanding the science driving it.
